Study Mode Full-Time
This is a pre-vocational course for learners seeking a career in a construction trade. The first stage of the course is common to eleven construction trades and provides an introduction to the industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations.
The units of competency cover essential occupational health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills, work planning, and basic use of tools and materials.
The latter stage of the course provides the learner with a choice to complete specific competencies from a particular trade stream that lead directly into a trade qualification, with full articulation and credit transfer, when seeking an apprenticeship.

- Enjoy manual work and have a good level of physical fitness.
- Have good communication skills.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Show ability to follow instructions, Work Health and Safety procedures and work to deadlines.
- Display good hand-eye coordination, accurate and careful with work.
- Have basic reading, writing and math skills.
- Enjoy working in an outdoor environment.
- Show confidence working at heights.
This entry level qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work safely in a carpentry environment. You will gain the essential skills employers are looking for, boosting your chances of securing an apprenticeship in the industry.
Time Commitment – You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on campus and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research, complete assessment requirements and complete work placement.
You will need to complete:
- 150 hours of mandatory supervised work placement, in a suitable environment, that provides the services in this selected area of study. South Regional TAFE will assist in arranging this suitable work placement within the industry for you.
- Work Placement Journal documenting hours of work and tasks performed.
- Attendance at the work placement regularly and reliably.

Travel to and from the suitable work environment to complete work placement.

Work placement times may be outside of standard South Regional TAFE student hours and can vary between placement sites.
