Get started on your career in conservation and ecosystem management. This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge in conservation and ecosystem management for Indigenous land management, lands, parks and wildlife services and the restoration and rehabilitation of ecosystems.

South Regional TAFE has recently transitioned this qualification to the new training package. Please be aware some campuses may still be offering the old qualification during the transition stage.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must: 

  • Have an interest in conservation, ecosystems and the environment.
  • Enjoy practical / manual work.
  • Get enjoyment of nature and outdoors.
  • Able to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Have ability to cope with varied outdoor weather conditions (e.g., heat, rain, cold, wind).
  • Be able to cope with nature (e.g., flies, insects, spiders).
  • Have high stamina and fitness levels.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills.
  • Show ability to accurately follow plans and instructions and work to deadlines.
  • Display ability to follow work health and safety procedures and respond to immediate safety risks.
  • Show tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

This course is general introduction to conservation, ecosystems and environmental skills. You will learn how to recognise flora and fauna, operate basic machinery and equipment and depending on which Campus you enrol treat weeds, maintain wildlife habitat refuges, perform basic ecological restoration work or learn how to operate a handheld GPS device.

Time Commitment  You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.
