The Diploma of Conservation and Ecosystem Management will help build your career by developing your skills for management roles.

The Diploma of Conservation and Ecosystem Management is a course that will build your skills to bring your knowledge of the field into the development of management plans.  The first half of the course develops skills needed to produce reports, including report writing and the production of maps.  These are developed in the context of working in the conservation sector and develop skills in plant identification and conducting biological surveys.  The second half of the course lets you develop a management plan for a site that is useful to your career.   During this phase you will produce an ecological restoration plan, fire fuel load assessment and produce an overall Management Plan for the site.  This plan should be used for obtaining promotions or employment.

In this course you will learn the knowledge and skills to:

  • Produce map through the use of Geographic Information Systems.
  • Plan river restoration works
  • Understand how to be culturally responsible while conducting work.
  • Manage yourself and other people in the work environment.
  • Conduct biological surveys with skills in plant collection and classification.
  • Assess fire fuel loads and develop ecosystem restoration plans.
  • Produce a management plan for a site using all the skills learned throughout the course.

  • Value safety in the workplace for yourself and others
  • Have well-developed communication, English reading and writing skills and be competent using a computer.
  • Be prepared to write short paragraphs and lists.
  • Possess computer skills will be developed for use with Geographic Information Systems
  • Be prepared to collect and collate information
  • Be fit enough to work in an around flowing water with steep riverbanks.
  • Have problem-solving ability.
  • Show good attention to detail.
  • Show ability to work as part of a team.
  • Be able to follow instructions and follow Work Health and Safety procedures. 

Time Commitment:

You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.

Class is held once a week for the whole course and students will need to spend an additional 5 hours a week on their assignments.

  • Technology - Adapt to new tools, access digital resources, and integrate technology into your learning.
