Turn your passion for furniture making and timber into a career.
This cabinet-making course will provide you with foundational skills to manufacture and install furniture and cabinetry. You’ll finish the course prepared to work in furniture making with basic industry specific skills and knowledge to enable transition into an apprenticeship. 
Along with career skills such as communication and safe-work practices, you will master woodwork techniques including:
- taking accurate measurements for cabinets and other furniture
- creating basic technical drawings
- using hand tools and power tools
- assembling and finishing cabinets

This entry level qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work safely in a furniture and cabinet making environment. You will gain the essential skills to manufacture and install furniture and cabinetry. This will give you the foundational skills employers are looking for, boosting your chances of securing an apprenticeship in the industry.

Time Commitment  You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on campus as outlined in your training plan; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research, and complete assessment requirements.

You will need to complete:

  • 150 hours of mandatory supervised work placement, in a suitable environment, that provides the services in this selected area of study. South Regional TAFE will assist in arranging this suitable work placement within the industry for you.
  • Work Placement Journal documenting hours of work and tasks performed.

  • Attendance at the work placement regularly and reliably.
  • Travel to and from the suitable work environment to complete work placement.

  • Work placement times may be outside of standard South Regional TAFE student hours and can vary between placement sites.

    • Using hand and power tools.
    • Create basic technical drawings.
    • Take accurate measurements for cabinets and other furniture.
    • Prepare surfaces.
    • Assemble and finish cabinets.
    • Hand-make timber joints and join solid timber.
    • Operate basic static machines.
    • Apply workplace health and safety practices.
