The course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to perform tasks associated with entry-level workforce participation, in a range of trade-related industries. Some tasks include safe operations within the workplace, communication in the workplace, planning and organisational requirements, general maintenance within a variety of settings and communication with trades persons.
- You are a year 11 or 12 high school student, or equivalent and want to gain an insight into a Trades career*.
To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:
- Enjoy working with your hands and using tools.
- Have ability to communicate with others.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Show ability to follow instructions and work health and safety procedures.
- Have basic reading, writing and math skills.
This entry-level course has been developed for year 11 and 12 high school students to provide a taster into a Trades or Workshop-related career. It acts as a suitable bridging course into a pre-apprenticeship, traineeship or apprenticeship.
While undertaking this course, you will be exposed to a trades or workshop-related working environment, where you will learn practical skills in safe operations, communication, planning and organisation, general maintenance and a range of trade-related duties.
Time Commitment – You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on campus; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research, and complete assessment requirements.

- Planning – Learn how to manage time well. Knowing how to prioritise and completing your tasks efficiently are crucial for your success.
- Self-Management - Reflect on your performance. Reflection is a powerful tool for growth and success as a student at South Regional TAFE. Being a professional in the workplace can mean learning when to accept responsibility for your failures as often as your successes. This is how we learn!
- Learning – Recognise what your strengths already are. Then embrace all the new knowledge and experience from your South Regional TAFE journey to grow as a student. Some of the skills you will learn include:
- Plan and organise work.
- Communicate in the workplace.
- Carry out basic workplace calculations.
- Undertake a basic construction project.
- Use basic equipment for fabrication and welding.
- Safe operations within the workplace including first aid.
- Technology - Adapt to new tools, access digital resources, and integrate technology into your learning.
