Learning to safely take venous blood samples, perform specimen collection and prevent the spread of infection are some of the many skills you will gain on completion of this course.

This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession, plus resource fees and other fees that may apply to your course.

Study Mode Full-Time
This qualification reflects the role of pathology collectors. Workers in this role follow known routines and procedures, taking responsibility for their own work under general supervision. They combine communication, customer service and technical skills, and use discretion and judgement to adapt and transfer their skills to different situations.
- You would like to become a Phlebotomist.
- You would like to work in the health services area in hospital wards, outpatient clinics and/or off-site collection rooms.
- You have had a blood test and found the experience interesting. You investigated the equipment in the room. You enjoy talking to people and helping them feel at ease during what can be a stressful time.

- Be comfortable with needles, human blood, urine and stool samples.
- Feel capable of taking venous blood samples with different types of needles.
- Show attention to detail with accurate recording of these details.
- Demonstrate good hand-eye coordination.
- Have good time management, administration and organisational skills.
- Show empathy and compassion.
- Have good Customer service skills.

- Have physical stamina. Able to stand on your feet for long periods of time.

In this role you will follow known routines and procedures, taking responsibility for your own work under general supervision. You will combine communication, Customer Service and technical skills, and use discretion and judgement to adapt and transfer these skills to different situations. The skills learnt in this course are highly transferable and can be used in other health related studies and career paths – Laboratory Techniques, Nursing, Pharmacy and/or Anaesthetic Technology and practice.
Time Commitment
You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and work placement.
You will need to complete:
- Supervised work placement, in a suitable environment, that provides the services in this selected area of study. South Regional TAFE will arrange this suitable work placement within the industry for you.
- Vaccinations, prior to placement, if requested by the workplace. This will incur an additional cost. To find out more about vaccinations click here.
- National Police Clearance, prior to placement, if requested by the workplace. This clearance will incur an additional cost. To find out more about this clearance click here.
- Attendance at the work placement regularly and reliably.
- Travel to and from the suitable work environment to complete work placement.
- Work placement at times that may be outside of standard South Regional TAFE student hours.
