When you complete this course you will be ready for a career in early childhood education and care. You will have the skills and knowledge to work effectively as an educator, supporting the development and wellbeing of children aged 0 to 5 years. You will gain an understanding of children's individual developmental needs and be able to provide safe learning opportunities and support to children from diverse backgrounds.

Then this is the course for you. 

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:   

  • enjoy working with young children (0-5 years). 

  • have observational skills to identify changes in behaviour, abilities and environment. 

  • have good communication skills to liaise and work with a range of people. 

  • have good listening and writing skills. 

  • be able to work independently as well as part of a team. 

  • be physically capable of performing manual tasks commonly required in early childhood education and care, such as lifting children and handling educational equipment. 

  • have basic problem-solving skills and the ability to respond to immediate safety risks. 

  • have tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and who are neurodivergent. 

  • be able to assist personal care needs* of both male and female children, which includes all aspects of dressing, feeding and toileting while demonstrating and practicing good hygiene. 

*Personal care includes but is not limited to: changing nappies and ensuring proper disposal and assisting with toileting, cleaning body fluids like vomit and nasal discharge, preparing foods and assisting with feeding, when appropriate, recognising and responding to signs of infections, or discomfort.    

When you complete this course, you will be ready for a career in early childhood education and care. You will have the skills and knowledge to work effectively as an educator, supporting the development and wellbeing of children aged 0 to 5 years. You will gain an understanding of children’s individual developmental needs and be able to provide safe learning opportunities and support children from diverse backgrounds. 

Time Commitment: You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete the mandatory work placement. 

You will need to complete:  

  • mandatory supervised work placement in a regulated childcare centre. South Regional TAFE will arrange this suitable work placement within the industry for you.  

  • a Working With Children Check (WWCC) prior to attending the work placement (Not required for students under the age of 18 years). This will incur an additional cost. To find out more about a WWCC click here(opens in a new tab) . 

  • vaccinations prior to work placement, if requested by the workplace. This will incur an additional cost. To find out more about vaccinations click here(opens in a new tab) . 

  • a National Police Clearance prior to work placement, if requested by the workplace. This will incur an additional cost. To find out more about this clearance click here(opens in a new tab) . 

  • attendance at the work placement regularly and reliably. 

  • travel to and from a regulated early childhood education and care service to complete work placement. 

  • work placement at times that may be outside of standard South Regional TAFE student hours to reflect industry requirements.

  • Communication: Engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, communicate ideas clearly, and foster trust and strong relationships.   

  • Teamwork - Collaborate with other educators, children and their families, treat others with respect, and be open to feedback. 

  • Problem Solving: Proactively find solutions, engage with challenges, ask questions, and respond appropriately within your scope of practice.   

  • Initiative: Stay motivated, take proactive steps, and seek help when necessary.  

  • Planning: Manage time well. Prioritise and complete tasks efficiently and effectively. 

  • Self-Management: Reflect on your performance. Acknowledge your success and take responsibility for your shortcomings.  

  • Learning: Recognise your strengths while embracing new knowledge and experiences to support personal and professional growth.  Some of the skills you will learn include: 

    • Learn to interact and foster the development of young children. 

    • Work within legal and ethical requirements. 

    • Ensure children's health, safety and wellbeing is prioritised.

    • Work with children of different backgrounds and cultures. 

    • Provide support to children in different early childhood education and care environments. 

    • Undertake work placement to apply the practical skills and knowledge you have learned. 

    • First aid in an educational and care setting. 

    • Provide care for babies, toddlers and children. 

    • Use an approved learning framework and information about children to inform and guide practice.
