This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession, plus resource fees and other fees that may apply to your course.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops. Job roles involve mainly routine and repetitive tasks using practical skills and basic industry knowledge, working under direct supervision.

This course is perfect for individuals looking to start their career in the Hospitality Industry. It offers practical training, providing real-world experience in the Food Service sector, including making coffee and drinks, customer service, and teamwork.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider these essential skills and knowledge below.  You must:

  • Enjoy interacting with customers and coworkers, speaking clearly and warmly.
  • Be prepared to make customers happy and provide a great experience while serving food and drinks like coffee and smoothies.
  • Pay attention to detail.
  • Be able to stand and concentrate for long periods.
  • Manage your time effectively, especially during busy periods.
  • Keep yourself and your workspace clean and hygienic.
  • Enjoy working with others and communicating as part of a team.
  • Have basic problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and address safety or hygiene risks.
  • Be capable of performing manual tasks, such as holding and serving from trays, carrying plates of food, and serving hot and cold drinks.
  • Handle money, calculate bills, and keep track of supplies.
  • Understand how to handle customer complaints and make them feel welcome.
  • Be comfortable serving all types of foods, including meat, seafood, eggs, and nuts. If you have dietary restrictions due to medical reasons, please discuss options with South Regional TAFE lecturers.
  • Be able to manage your time and thrive under pressure.
  • Tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with and serve people from different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Be available to work weekends, public holidays, and different shifts. According to work placement / work experience requirements.

Time Commitment â€“ You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and undertake independent study outside of class hours

You will need to:

  • Complete all required service shifts at your traineeship location (if a trainee) or our live-works restaurants (if undertaking this course on-campus).
  • Bunbury Campus live-works is at the Epicure Training Restaurant.
  • Margaret River Campus live-works is at Gather and Feast Training Restaurant.
  • Attend service shifts regularly and reliably. Absenteeism will affect progress in this course.Organise your own travel to and from these service shifts. Some of these service shifts will be outside South Regional TAFE standard student hours.
  • Understand your work sites Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations and safety requirements under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and Codes of Practice. You will be required to comply with these WHS obligations while undertaking supervised service shifts. Any concern about WHS please direct queries to the supervisor of the service shifts.

The South Regional TAFE Training Restaurant – Epicure & Gather and Feast– offers students the opportunity to learn in real-life settings within our award-winning facilities. Students gain hands-on experience working with the restaurant and kitchen team enhancing the dining experience for customers by serving them food and drinks.

Below are some of the important personal skills you will be required to develop and demonstrate during training. These skills are highly valued by industry. 

  • Communication - Be able to talk to people from diverse backgrounds, share your ideas clearly, and build strong relationships. You'll need to speak English well with clients and staff and provide excellent customer service.
  • Teamwork - Work well with others, show respect, and be open to feedback.
  • Problem Solving - When there's a problem at work, focus on finding a solution. If you spot an issue, ask questions, clarify things, and find a way to fix it!
  • Initiative - Stay motivated, take proactive steps, and ask for help when you need it.
  • Planning - Manage your time well. Know how to prioritise tasks before and during service, whilst completing your tasks efficiently is crucial for your success.
  • Self-Management - Reflect on your performance. Learning from both your successes and failures is key to growing as a student and a professional. Accept responsibility and use it as a learning experience.
  • Learning - Recognise your strengths and embrace new knowledge and experiences from your South Regional TAFE journey.
