Study Mode Full-Time

This qualification will provide you with practical skills and knowledge in a range of metals and engineering industry areas. You will learn skills in using tools, measuring and calculating, technical drawing and drafting, load shifting, thermal cutting, using forging and casting equipment, and welding. You will also learn about safety in the workplace, computing and mathematics. You will be able to practice the skills you have learned in a workshop environment when undertaking work placement.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must: 

  • Have a technical and mechanical aptitude
  • Enjoy manual work and have a good level of physical fitness.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with others.
  • Show ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Able to follow instructions and Work Health and Safety procedures.
  • Have good hand-eye coordination, accurate and careful with work.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Have basic reading, writing and math skills.

This entry level qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge in a range of metals and engineering industry areas. You will gain the essential skills employers are looking for, boosting your chances of securing an apprenticeship in the industry.

Time Commitment â€“ You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on campus as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research, complete assessment requirements and complete work placement.

You will need to complete:

  • 150 hours of mandatory supervised work placement, in a suitable environment, that provides the services in this selected area of study. South Regional TAFE will assist in arranging this suitable work placement within the industry for you.
  • Work Placement Journal documenting hours of work and tasks performed.
  • Attendance at the work placement regularly and reliably.
  • Travel to and from the suitable work environment to complete work placement.

  • Work placement times may be outside of standard South Regional TAFE student hours and can vary between placement sites.
