This course trains novice operators in the skills required to enter the industry as a certified skid steer loader operator.

This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession, plus resource fees and other fees that may apply to your course.

This course trains novice operators in the skills required to enter the industry as a certified skid steer loader operator.
The course covers:
• Plan and prepare for skid steer loader operations
• Operate skid steer loader
• Load, carry and place materials
• Select, remove and fit attachments
• Relocate the skid steer loader
• Carry out machine operator maintenance
• Conduct housekeeping activities
On successful completion of this course, students will receive a statement of attainment for the nationally accredited unit RIIMPO318F – Conduct civil construction skid steer loader operations. Successful students will also receive a Heavy Equipment Accreditation wallet card.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:
- Have an interest in operating machinery and basic mechanical understanding.
- Demonstrate sound English reading and writing skills.
- Have well-developed communication.
- Demonstrate good hand-eye coordination for precise control of the machine’s movements.
- Display sound level of fitness to perform practical assessments.
- Have problem-solving ability.
- Have good attention to detail.
- Show spatial awareness to understand surroundings to manoeuvre the skid steer safely.
- Show the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Be able to follow instructions and follow Work Health and Safety procedures.
This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to safely operate a skid steer.
Time Commitment – You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.
