This beginners sewing course builds on skills  learnt in  Introduction to Sewing Skill set, offered in Semester 1. In this course you will learn to confidently lay and cut out fabric to create simple garments using a sewing machine and overlocker.  Industry standard techniques help you solve common sewing problems and build your self – confidence.

Basic workplace skills are built along the way including the development of personal, social and employability skills leading to further study at Certificate II level or to assist in finding new career directions.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally accredited units:

  • GATTEC102         Apply basic digital literacy for training or workplace purposes
  • MSTCL1001         Produce a simple garment-
  • FSKLRG017         Identify simple strategies to respond to familiar workplace problems

  • Able to follow instructions and Work Health and Safety procedures.

This introductory course builds your skills and knowledge to use a sewing machine and overlocker to sew a variety of simple items. It is designed to build on from the learnings from MAC26 Introduction to Sewing Skill Set. Industry standard techniques will help you solve common sewing problems and build your self-confidence.

Basic workplace skills are built along the way including the development of personal, social and employability skills leading to further study opportunities at Certificate II level or to assist in finding new career directions.

Time Commitment You will need to allocate sufficient time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on campus as outlined in your training plan; and undertake some independent study outside of class hours to practice techniques to prepare for assessment

    • Digital literacy and internet research to help find inspiration and source quality online tutorials
    • Practical maths to plan projects, such as calculating fabric quantities, and how seam allowances affect your final garment
    • Lay and cut fabric for economical and accurate cutting
    • Use a sewing machine and overlocker confidently including how to trouble shoot common problems
    • Self-confidence to plan and sew clothes using the right fabric for the style, to sew components in the right sequence, and correct mistakes
  • Technology: Use industry techniques, adapt to new tools and integrate digital technology into your learning.
