This course is for those seeking to obtain the necessary training for Work Health and Safety and also the pathway for both a licence to meet Health Department requirements for a Pest Management Technician and a business if you are applying chemical for commercial gain.

Level 3 Chemical Risk Management (Backpack)

Pest, weed and disease control allows you to control weeds and some outdoor garden insects and disease using hand-held and backpack equipment used to treat lawns and gardens and for landscaping, bushland and mine site rehabilitation. To use mechanical equipment or supervise those using chemicals you need to also complete level 4.

Level 4 Chemical Risk Management (mechanical-supervisor-boomspray)

Pest, weed and disease control (mechanical equipment) - this includes treatment of crops and pasture, forestry and tur management to control weeds and pests using mechanical equipment such as drones, boom sprays, quad-bike mounted sprays or air-blast equipment. It includes pest treatments for ovals, greens, firebreaks and recreational areas in the urban environment. It does not allow you to treat pests in domestic or commercial premises.

Chemicals are one of the most used tools in Agriculture. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to obtain the necessary training for Work Health and Safety requirements. It will enable you to obtain a contract operator's license from the WA Department of Health, as a Pest Management Technician and/or for a business if you are applying chemical for commercial gain.

Skills and knowledge elements include:

  • Common pests, weeds and diseases found in Western Australia
  • Common pests, weeds and disease controls used in Western Australia (following Integrated Pest Management strategies)
  • Safe disposal of chemical residue and containers
  • Correct Personal Protective Equipment for selected control measures
  • Understanding a chemical label, schedules and use of chemicals
  • Understanding Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Groups (mode of action) of chemicals and their formulations
  • Instructing personnel
  • Evaluation and continuous improvement
  • Procedures to minimise risk
  • Planning and implementing a chemical control program
  • You want to be safe, secure and skilled when working with chemicals in Agriculture, Horticulture, Viticulture, Natural Resource Management, lawn and garden care, landscaping, bushland, mine site rehabilitation and related industries.
  • You need the training for Work, Health and Safety compliance when using chemicals at your workplace.
  • You need to obtain the mandatory licence to meet the WA Department of Health requirements for a Pest Management Technician (Backpack) when you are spraying chemicals for commercial gain or any reward - Endorsement 8.
  • You need to obtain the mandatory licence to meet the WA Department of Health requirements for a Pest Management Technician (Mechanical – Supervisor - Boom Spray) when you are spraying chemicals for commercial gain or any reward - Endorsement 7.

The level 3 Chemical Risk Management (Backpack) course is held over three consecutive days, covering three units of competency. 

The level 4 Chemical Risk Management (Boom Spray) course requires you to attend the first three days (Backpack) and then two consecutive additional days to complete 3 more units to complete the level 4 attaining 6 units of competency in all.

Time Commitment  You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.
