This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession, plus resource fees and other fees that may apply to your course.

This qualification allows individuals to develop post-trade skills and knowledge across a broad coverage of the industry prior to undertaking higher level roles in the industry.

  • You want a career in the Horticulture Sector with senior and supervisory roles.
  • You enjoy being outside in nature, cultivating gardens and love seeing your work flourish. You are passionate about the environment, gardening, nurseries and landscape settings where each day and season offers something different.
  • You seek to understand better the relationships between environment, soils and cultural needs of plants.

Then this is the course for you.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must: 

  • Show an interest in the Horticulture Industry.
  • Enjoy practical / manual work.
  • Enjoy nature and outdoors.
  • Show your ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Demonstrate your ability to lead, educate and train less qualified
  • Be able to cope with varied weather conditions outdoor (e.g., heat, rain, cold, wind).
  • Be able to cope with nature (e.g., flies, insects, spiders).
  • Have high stamina and fitness levels.
  • Demonstrate your problem-solving skills.
  • Have an eye for detail and good hand-eye coordination.
  • Demonstrate your ability to accurately follow plans and instructions and work to deadlines.
  • Show your ability to follow Work Health and Safety procedures and respond to immediate safety risks.
  • Show tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

This course will provide you with Horticulture skills and techniques to lead a team as a supervisor or business owner. You can also enter many related industries such as local councils, Conservation and Ecosystem Management and landscaping companies.

Time Commitment â€“ You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.

  • Planning - Manage time well. Knowing how to prioritise and completing your tasks efficiently are crucial for your success.
