Start your pathway into the electrical and electrotechnology industries. The Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) provides an introduction to the electrical and electrotechnology industries. This course gives students a grounding in workplace safety, basic electrical principles, hand skills, tools, equipment, components and work practices used across electrotechnology trades.

It is suitable for students who are interested in exploring a pathway into an electrical apprenticeship, further study, or entry-level work in the electrotechnology industry. Students will develop practical skills in a workshop environment while learning how to work safely, follow instructions, communicate with others and apply basic problem-solving skills.

This qualification is a work-entry program and does not provide an electrical licence. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. The national qualification description states that UEE22025 provides grounding in safety and basic skills and knowledge for work in any electrotechnology discipline.

In this course, students will learn the basic skills and knowledge needed to begin exploring a career in the electrotechnology industry. This includes working safely, using basic tools and equipment, identifying electrical components, applying basic electrical principles, carrying out simple practical tasks, and understanding workplace expectations. Students will also build foundation skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, measuring, following instructions and applying Work Health and Safety procedures in a practical training environment.

This entry level qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work safely in an Electrotechnology environment. You will gain the essential skills employers are looking for, boosting your chances of securing a position in the electrical, instrumentation or electrical servicing trades.

Time Commitment â€“ You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research, complete assessment requirements, and mandatory work placement.

Work placement requirements depend on the state code the student is enrolled under.

Students enrolled under state codes that require workplace placement must complete 150 hours of supervised work placement in a suitable electrotechnology industry environment. South Regional TAFE will provide guidance on suitable work placement arrangements and any workplace requirements that may apply.

Students enrolled under the Western Australian state code BTQ-6 are not required to complete 150 hours of work placement. This exemption applies under current Department of Training and Workforce Development program arrangements for BTQ-6 coded delivery of UEE22025 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start).

Where work placement is required, students must:

  • Complete 150 hours of supervised work placement in a suitable electrotechnology industry environment.
  • Attend the workplace regularly and reliably for the required placement hours.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety requirements, workplace policies and supervisor instructions.
  • Self-fund travel to and from the work placement location.
  • Complete any workplace-specific requirements before placement, if requested by the workplace.

Depending on the workplace, students may also be required to obtain one or more of the following before placement:

Students will be advised before placement if any additional checks, clearances or workplace requirements apply.

  • Respectful Communication - Communicate clearly and respectfully with trainers, supervisors, classmates and industry personnel. Listen to instructions, ask questions when unsure, and share information in a safe and appropriate way.
  • Teamwork - Work cooperatively with others in a workshop and simulated workplace environment. Show respect, contribute to group tasks, accept feedback and support safe work practices.
  • Problem Solving – Identify basic problems during practical activities, ask questions, follow procedures and seek assistance when required. Apply safe and logical steps to complete tasks.
  • Initiative – Stay motivated, participate in practical activities, prepare for class and take responsibility for learning. Seek help when needed and show a willingness to improve.
  • Planning and Organisation – Manage time, follow task instructions, prepare tools and materials, and complete theory and practical activities within required timeframes.
  • Learning – Build on existing strengths while developing new knowledge and practical skills in electrotechnology. Be open to feedback and use it to improve performance.
  • Technology – Use basic tools, equipment, digital resources and learning systems safely and appropriately. Develop confidence using technology as part of training and workplace preparation.
  • Safety Awareness – Apply Work Health and Safety requirements, follow safe work procedures, use personal protective equipment correctly and consider the safety of yourself and others.
