Web Development for Introductory Roles Skill Set
This hands-on skill set is built for small business owners, sole traders, community groups and career changers who want to create a professional website from the ground up, building the skills to keep it looking great long after the course is done. No prior coding experience required.
Over 20 face-to-face sessions at the Bunbury campus, you'll work on a real website project from day one. You'll learn how to plan and design a site that looks the part, write basic HTML and CSS to customise it, manage content through a modern Content Management System (CMS), and make sure it's accessible to all visitors and findable on Google. You'll also set up and manage your own web hosting, so you're not dependent on anyone else to keep your site online.
The course follows a real project lifecycle, from brief and design, through to build, test and launch giving you experience of the workflow from idea to go live.
This skill set provides a direct pathway to the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Web Development).

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:

Be comfortable using a computer for everyday tasks — email, file management, web browsing and basic cloud tools (OneDrive or similar)

Be able to read moderately detailed written materials, including step-by-step guides and technical instructions

Be able to write content clearly in English, you'll be creating and editing text for real web pages

Have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection at home for between-session practice

Be available to attend daytime face-to-face sessions at the Bunbury campus

Be willing to practise and experiment between sessions. learning web skills builds through repetition

Bring patience and a problem-solving mindset getting a website right takes iteration, and that's part of the process
Time Commitment: This course runs from July to December 2026 across 20 sessions at the Bunbury campus. Total time commitment is made up of:

20 x 7 hour face-to-face session in the Bunbury ICT lab (20 sessions of 7 hours each)

2 – 3 hours per week of out-of-class activities
All hardware, software and hosting environments are provided on campus, you don't need to purchase or install anything to get started. Between-session tasks will require a computer and internet access at home.

Project Management: Plan and drive a website project through each stage, from initial brief to final handover, making decisions and meeting milestones along the way.

Design Thinking: Approach each page layout and content decision from the visitor's perspective, creating sites that are intuitive, visually clear and purposeful.

Technical Problem Solving: Diagnose and fix layout, content and compatibility issues across browsers and devices without panicking or outsourcing.

Communication: Write clear, well-structured web content and translate a client brief or business goal into design and structure decisions.

Attention to Detail: Spot broken links, layout inconsistencies, accessibility failures and SEO gaps before they reach your visitors.

Initiative: Take ownership of your project, make design decisions independently and seek help when you hit a wall rather than waiting.

Planning and Time Management: Balance class sessions with between-session tasks, manage file versions and meet staged deadlines across a multi-month project.
