This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive a statement of attainment for the following nationally accredited units HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Specific licensing / regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:

  • Have a sound level of physical fitness. Components of this course require you to bend, kneel and physically perform CPR to meet the required standard.
  • Be able to meet the physical assessment requirements to ensure you can perform an actual resuscitation, in an emergency as a first aider.
  • Show well-developed communication and listening skills to liaise and work with a range of people in stressful situations.
  • Have good problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly, calmly and effectively.
  • Have a good understanding of the importance of personal and professional boundaries regarding privacy and confidentiality and ethical behaviour.

This Skill Set is suitable for people working in all industries and for all members of the community i.e., Healthcare Workers, Workplace First-Aid Responders, Mine Site Workers, Community Services Workers, Sport Coaches, people with elderly family members, parents and caregivers.

Please consider the following carefully before enrolling. Some topics within this course may be triggering if you have experienced trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and/or other crisis. Please ensure you have sufficient support networks for the duration of your study. Support is also available through South Regional TAFE Student Services, who can direct you to our student support services, including Counsellors, Aboriginal Services, and Disability Services.

Time Commitment â€“ You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, and research to successfully complete this course; and complete assessment requirements of this course.

  • Learning – Recognise what your strengths already are. Then embrace all the new knowledge and experience from your South Regional TAFE journey to grow as a student. Some of the key skills you will learn from this course include:
    • Perform CPR in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.
    • Recognise and respond to an emergency.
    • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
    • Communicate details of the incident to emergency services and complete a workplace incident form.
    • Understand the legal considerations and welfare needs post incident, including awareness of potential need for stress management techniques and available support for rescuers.
