This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession, plus resource fees and other fees that may apply to your course.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as skilled operators with civil construction plants, applying a broad range of skills in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge. These individuals may provide theoretical advice and support a team.
- You want a career in Civil Construction as a Mobile Plant Operator, Pipe Layer, Bridge Construction or Road Construction Worker.
Then this is the course for you.
To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:
- Have an interest in Construction and Mobile Plant equipment.
- Enjoy manual work and have a good level of physical fitness to manage physical demands in the workplace such as safely climbing ladders, handle tools, perform manual handling and move within confined, elevated or awkward spaces.
- Have good hand-eye coordination.
- Show ability to communicate with others.
- Be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Demonstrate ability to follow instructions, Work Health and Safety procedures and work to deadlines.
- Have sound reading, writing and math skills.
This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work safely within the civil construction industry. You will perform routine tasks including manual excavation, and use of hand power tools as well as learning to safely operate mobile plant such as skid steers and excavators. You will also develop a range of transferable skills including communicating in the workplace, planning and organising work, and working safely by following Work Health and Safety policies and procedures.
