When All year round

Study Mode On Campus

Students attending this skill set will gain practical, lifesaving skills you can use anywhere. You will master CPR techniques, learn how to use an AED, and practise responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies. You will explore how to assess hazards, manage incidents, treat wounds, control bleeding, and support someone experiencing shock, burns, fractures or sudden illness. You will also learn how to communicate effectively in emergencies and follow safe, legal and ethical first aid procedures. On successful completion of this course will walk away with confidence managing first aid emergencies and receive a statement of attainment for the following nationally accredited units; HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support & HLTAID011 Provide first aid.

  • Do you know how to recognize and manage an unconscious person, OR how to place the patient in the recovery position and monitor them while waiting for an Ambulance? 

  • Do you know how to perform EFFECTIVE CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) or how to provide first aid for a wide range of situations when responding to an unknown first aid incident? 

  • Do you want to be more confident and effective in stressful first aid situations?

If so, then this is the course for you. 

 

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below. You must:  

  • Be physically capable of meeting assessment requirements, including performing CPR to meet the required standard. 

  • You MUST be able to meet the physical assessment requirements to ensure you can perform an actual resuscitation, in an emergency as a first aider. 

  • Communicate and listen effectively when working with a diverse range of people, often in high pressure situations. 

  • Have good problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly, calmly and effectively. 

  • Understand the importance of personal and professional boundaries regarding privacy and confidentiality and ethical behaviour. 

Please consider the following carefully before enrolling. Some topics within this course may be triggering if you have experienced trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and/or other crisis. Please ensure you have sufficient support networks for the duration of your study. Support is also available through South Regional TAFE Student Services(opens in a new tab) , who can direct you to our student support services, including Counsellors, Aboriginal Services, and Disability Services. 

 

Time Commitment: You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, and research to successfully complete this course; and complete assessment requirements of this course.

  • Problem Solving: Proactively find solutions, engage with challenges, ask questions, and respond appropriately within your scope of practice. 

  • Initiative: Stay motivated, take initiative, and seek help when needed. 

  • Planning: Manage time well. Prioritise and complete tasks efficiently and effectively. 

  • Self-Management: Reflect on your performance. Acknowledge your success and take responsibility for your shortcomings. 

  • Learning: Recognise your strengths while embracing new knowledge and experiences to support personal and professional growth. Some of the skills you will include: 

  • Managing an unconscious person and the recovery position. 

  • Performing CPR in an emergency (adult and infant) in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. 

  • Providing first aid for a range of conditions (e.g., cardiac arrest, choking, bleeding, head injury / concussion, burns / scalds, heat stroke / hypothermia, allergic reaction / anaphylaxis, shock, bites / stings, fractures / sprains / strains and medical conditions). 

  • Infection control and personal safety. 

  • Communicating details of the incident to emergency services and complete a workplace incident form. 

  • Understanding the legal considerations and welfare needs post incident, including awareness of potential need for stress management techniques and available support for rescuers.
