This skill set is designed for individuals working in industries such as mining, construction, and civil infrastructure, to equip learners with the practical skills and safety knowledge required to operate small plant and equipment in a variety of work environments.

The course focuses on preparing participants to confidently and safely handle tools and machinery such as plate compactors, concrete mixers, jackhammers, and small generators. Learners will gain experience in conducting pre-operational checks, operating equipment efficiently, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring safe storage and housekeeping practices. Ideal for those entering operational roles or seeking to formalise existing skills, and includes both theoretical and practical components. PPE is required, and participants must be prepared for physical activity in a hands-on learning environment.

In this course you will learn the knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand and apply relevant Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulations when operating small plant and equipment
  • Prepare for equipment operation by identifying hazards, selecting appropriate PPE, and reviewing workplace procedures
  • Conduct pre-operational checks to ensure equipment is safe and ready for use
  • Operate a variety of small plant and equipment such as compactors, concrete mixers, jackhammers, quick cut/ demolition saw, and generators
  • Perform routine operator maintenance including cleaning, refuelling, and basic servicing
  • Respond to faults and apply safe shutdown procedures
  • Complete housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and safe worksite
  • Interpret manufacturer’s manuals and workplace documentation
  • Demonstrate safe work practices in both simulated and real workplace environments

Time Commitment

You will need to attend 8hrs of face to face delivery and assessment.

You may be required to undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements.
