In this course, you will learn the knowledge and skills to safely assist people with movement while maintaining their dignity, comfort, and independence. You will develop practical skills in safe manual handling techniques, assisting with transfers, repositioning people, using mobility aids and equipment such as hoists, slide sheets, Sara Stedy devices, and wheelchairs, and following individualised care plans. You will also learn how to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, identify potential risks, and apply workplace health and safety principles to protect both yourself and the people you support.

There must be evidence that the candidate has provided assistance with moving a person in at least 6 of the following situations:

Assisting a person or co-worker to use a hoist or mechanical lifter for transfers.

Assisting a person to use a Slide Sheet.

Assisting a person to be weighed on chair weighing scales

Assisting with transfers from wheelchair to shower chair and toilet

Assisting a person who is falling

Assisting a person to a standing position and seated position

To successfully complete this unit, you should be able to:

• Value safety in the workplace for yourself, your clients, and your colleagues.
• Have well-developed communication, English reading, and writing skills.
• Demonstrate a reasonable level of physical fitness to safely assist people with movement, transfers, repositioning, and mobility activities.
• Show problem-solving skills and the ability to respond appropriately to changing client needs.
• Demonstrate good attention to detail when following individualized care plans and safe work practices.
• Work effectively as part of a team and communicate with clients and other health care workers.
• Follow instructions and comply with Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, procedures, and safe manual handling practices.
• Treat all people with dignity, respect, and empathy while supporting their movement and mobility.
• Participants MUST be able to meet the physical assessment requirements to ensure they can perform the practical components of this course

Time Commitment: This course will run over two days, written component done for outside of class after the first day and must be returned for final day.

During this unit, students will develop and demonstrate key personal and professional skills essential for working in aged care, disability, and community support roles.

• Respectful Communication – Interact professionally with clients, colleagues, and people from diverse backgrounds, building trust, promoting dignity, and ensuring clear and effective communication during all aspects of movement support.
• Teamwork – Work collaboratively with others, including care staff and health professionals, to provide safe and coordinated support for client movement and mobility.
• Problem Solving – Identify and respond appropriately to challenges that arise during client care, such as mobility difficulties or safety risks, and seek clarification when required.
• Initiative – Demonstrate a proactive approach by recognizing client needs, following care plans, and seeking assistance when necessary to ensure safe outcomes.
• Planning and Organization – Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and follow structured care routines and safe manual handling procedures to support efficient and safe client care.
• Learning – Build on existing skills while actively engaging in new learning experiences, reflecting feedback, and applying knowledge in practical settings.
• Technology – Use relevant workplace and training technologies, including digital care documentation and learning resources, to support safe and accurate client care.
