The Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations skill set provides participants real, hands-on experience. 

In this training program you will learn how to:

  • follow work health and safety procedures;
  • carry out inspection of trucks and trailers;
  • secure, load and unload cargo of goods;
  • apply work fatigue management strategies;
  • understanding chain of responsibility. 

The driving instruction training component of the program is conducted in a range of conditions and locations, with coaching from qualified and experienced drivers.

Students will be able to obtain a Forklift License on the successful completion of this course

Industry licensing information: this course may allow students with the correct qualifications to apply for the National High Risk Licence class LF. Students must apply and pay for this licence separately with WorkSafe.

Subject to meeting the Department of Transport (DoT) licensing requirements, participants may apply for either a Heavy Rigid, Heavy Combination or Multi Combination Class Vehicle drivers licence.  Participants will also need to meet DoT's eligibility requirements.(opens in a new tab)

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below.  You must:

  • Have a strong interest in heavy vehicle operation.
  • Demonstrate an ability to read and interpret instructions/signs/maps.
  • Possess ability to write documents legibly.
  • Show well-developed communication.
  • Show a sound level of fitness to manage physical demands in the workplace, such as safely climbing in and out of trucks, bending and kneeling.
  • Show the ability to follow instructions, follow Work, Health and Safety procedures and comply with licencing requirements.

This course provides you with real, hands-on experience to ensure you have the necessary skills and training to work safely in the heavy vehicle road transport industry. You will be given the opportunity to obtain a forklift licence and one relevant heavy vehicle class licence - Heavy Rigid (HR), Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC).

Time Commitment  You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; and undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, research and complete assessment requirements. Practice hours will be required.
